What’s Happening

The Association of Independent Video & Filmmakers (AIVF) which closed its doors back in July 2006 has selected an organization, Independent Media Publications, to take over future publication of The Independent magazine.  The new publishing team includes Co-Founder and Publisher of NewEnglandFilm.com Michele Meek. Boston University’s Red Stone Film Festival will hold its screening on Wednesday, February 14th at 7 pm.The festival serves as a starting point for some of Boston University’s most talented  filmmakers. Additionally, the winner of BU’s prestigious Fleder-Rosenberg short screenplay contest will also be announced.  The event is open to the public and admission is free. The Ruff Cutz Independent Film Conference will be held February 24-25 at the Boston-Brookline Holiday Inn at 1200 Beacon St., with panels, seminars, and screenings. Featured guests will include Alex Ferrari & Jorge Rodriguez makers of the award winner horror short Broken, Patrick Smith of Blend Films, and Erik Latek, maker of the Documentary Sweet Dreams. The third annual Maine Film Academy Awards will be held Saturday February 24th  at 7 pm in the CMP Building at, 8 Water St. in  Downtown Waterville Maine. Honorees include Hannah Weddle of Brunswick, ME who is a recipient of the Coming Attraction Award for young and emerging filmmakers. Nancy Andrews of Bar Harbor, ME will receive the Outside the Fame Award for her series of films The Ima Plume Trilogy.  And the Groundbreaking Activist Leadership Award, which is given to a filmmaker whose films promote social change, will be given to the documentary There Ought to be a Law. Tickets are $25, and all proceeds go to benefit the Maine International Film Festival.  For more information, visit www.miff.org.

The Burlesque troupe The Boston BabyDolls is holding a Boffo Box Office benefit on Monday February 5th at the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline MA at 8 pm. The show will benefit the Professional Burlesque society, an organization that was put in place to educate performers on the art and tradition of burlesque. The evening begins with and a lecture and slide show on The Old Howard, Boston’s most significant burlesque hall.  There will be lectures and screening of the 1943 noir classic Lady of Burlesque, then the evening will conclude at Finale on 1306 Beacon Street for a desert party.  For more information, and to order tickets, visit http://www.bostonbabydolls.net/coolidge.php.  

What’s Happened

Nicholas Paleologos was named as the new executive director of the Massachusetts Film Office, part of the Massachusetts Sports & Entertainment Commission.  A prominent producer of several major studio feature films, numerous independent movies and theatrical shows, Paleologos is a two-time Tony Award winner and a former state representative.  For more information, visit http://www.masports.org/.

Written and directed by Randolph, Massachusetts native Tze Chun, the short film Windowbreaker was an official selection at the Sundance Film Festival. The film which was shot in Randolph and Quincy and won the audience choice award at the New York City Short Film Festival in November. The Artist’s Exchange in Cranston, Rhode Island completed its first annual short film festival on January 19-20. Chris Saplding won honorable mention for his film Balance. Winners also included Barstow and Miller by director J.P. Disciscio, which picked up three awards. Best Comedy went to director Jamie Banti for The Pee Pee Dance and Best Documentary went to Translate, a film by Rachel Ferro and Rocco Michaluk. What Will  Happen

The Rhode Island International Film Festival will he held August 7-12, and the 2007 deadline date for submissions is May 15th.  During this time they will also be holding their third annual Student Film Festival. The deadline for the student festival is June 15.  For more information, visit www.RIFilmFest.org.  

The 9th annual Provincetown Film Festival will take place  June 13-27. Lili Taylor will be honored with an excellence in acting award. Also at the festival, The Chlotrudis  Society will be sponsoring the fake rock documentary Brothers of the Head.  The submission deadline is Friday, February 16th .
