Happenings

The New England Online Film Festival is hosting an online Film Retrospective with short films from the past two plus decades of NewEnglandFilm.com. Watch the films online for free through October 15.

Celebrate the Vermont International Film Festival October 8-17. The festival will take place in person in Burlington and Montpelier, as well as virtually. Visit the festival website for more information.

The Boston Asian American Film Festival will take place October 20-24. This year’s festival will be completely virtual. For more information, check out baaff.org.

Flickers’ Vortex Sci-Fi, Fantasy & Horror Film Festival runs October 16-24 in Providence, Rhode Island. Events include screenings, discussions, and the H.P. Lovecraft Walking Tour. Purchase tickets and learn more here.

Providence hosts a Motif Film Screening Series this summer. Local filmmakers are encouraged
to submit to this series, which will take place on the second Tuesday of each month at DUSK in

Industry Buzz

2020 New England Film Star Award finalist Rachel Thomas’s short film In the Company of Crows recently screened at the Block Island International Film Festival, and will screen at other upcoming New England venues. Learn about the film here.

Hocus Pocus 2 will begin filming in Rhode Island this October. The sequel to the 1993 Halloween classic will shoot around the state over the next few months. Read more from the Boston Globe.

Opportunities

Applications are now open for the 3rd annual New England Film Star Award. This award is an in-kind grant to be given annually to one filmmaker living in New England for their film/video project. The mission of the award is to benefit a filmmaker who has been marginalized/minoritized in mainstream cinema due to their race, gender, gender identity, sexuality, class, able-bodiedness, and/or other factors. Applications are now open for Massachusetts Local Cultural Council grants for arts, humanities, and interpretive science projects in local communities. Online application deadline is October 15. Learn more here.
