Happenings

The Rhode Island International Film Festival runs August 5th to 10th. Special events include Opening Night Gala, the Rhode Island Film Forum, and a walking tour of Providence. For tickets and more details, click here.

The Coolidge Corner Theatre hosts ‘Boston Open Screen’ on August 12th. Filmmakers are encouraged to bring projects 10 minutes or less (including works in progress) to this open mic night. Sign ups start at 7:00 pm.

Enjoy the summer weather at Movies on the Block in Providence, Rhode Island. Catch free outdoor screenings at the corner of Westminster and Union Streets on Thursdays at dusk through September. This month, check out Moonrise Kingdom on August 7th, Annie Hall on August 14th, The Professional on August 21st, and The Wizard of Oz on August 28th. Filmmaker Alfred Thomas Catalfo’s films Moonlight Bait and Ammo, Slam Man and Bighorn have been selected to be screened at Boston Comic Con and will screen on Saturday, August 9, 2014, starting at 12:10 p.m. Moonlight Bait and Ammo will also premiere at the Rhode Island International Film Festival the same afternoon. Boston Comic Con takes place at the Seaport World Trade Center, 200 Seaport Boulevard, Boston, MA.

Filmmaker Marie-Emmanuelle Hartness screens her film After Ella at the Rhode Island International Film Festival on August 9. See website for details.

From August 5-10, Ashley Sabin and David Redmon’s Downeast will be broadcast on PBS World Channel’s America ReFramed. Set during an era of U.S. post-industrialization in which numerous factories have been exported, Downeast focuses on Antonio Bussone’s efforts to open a processing factory in rural Maine. The first broadcast will begin Tuesday, August 5 at 8 pm. The film will also air August 6, 9, and 10. Check your local PBS station for full schedules. Woody Allen has been shooting his latest movie in Rhode Island this summer. The film stars Emma Stone and Joaquin Phoenix. Read more from the Providence Journal.

Gus Van Sant has started filming his newest feature The Sea of Trees in Massachusetts. The film stars Naomi Watts, Matthew McConaughey, and Ken Watanabe.

The film Black Mass starring Johnny Depp as Whitey Bulger has been filming in Massachusetts. The film is slated for a 2015 release.

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick has announced that $15 million of the state’s capital plan will go to the Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund. The Council supports the arts, humanities, and sciences. Read more here.

The LEF Foundation has awarded $30,000 in pre-production grants for six documentary filmmakers in New England. Read more about the grants and the filmmakers at the LEF website.

Grants have been awarded by the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts to 126 recipients throughout the state. Funds support art and arts programming for schools, non-profits, and individuals. Learn more about the grants and artists here.

The National Endowment for the Arts has announced the recipients of its ‘Our Town’ grants, which fund community development around the country. New England recipients this year include Burlington, Vermont; Presque Island, Maine; Pittsfield, Massachusetts; New Haven, Connecticut; and Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Read more from the NEA.

Images Cinema in Williamstown, Massachusetts has named Doug Jones as its new Executive Director. He has worked for several arts organizations and film festivals, including roles at the Los Angeles Film Festival and the San Francisco International Film Festival. The LEF-funded projects Three Days to See (directed by Garrett Zevgetis) and The Guys Next Door (directed by Allie Humenuk and Amy Geller) have both been selected for IFP’s Spotlight on Documentaries at Independent Film Week this Fall. Among the 50 selected feature works-in-progress, these two projects will have opportunities to showcase their work to potential financing and distribution partners, and festival programmers. The film Leviathan, directed by Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Verena Paravel, has been nominated for the Grierson Trust’s 2014 Documentary Awards in the category of Best Cinema Documentary. The award winners will be announced on November 25.
