Women’s History Month: New England Filmmakers

For Women's History Month, Women in Film Video New England profiles a women from the local industry each day.

Women who are being profiled include Kate Kaminski, Cineanarchist, formerly of the Blue Stocking Film Festival, Armandina Cueva Media Producer and Consultant; Orly Yadin of the Vermont International Film Fest; Producer Nerissa Williams Scott; writer, director, activist Maria Giese; and others.

Women in Film and Video of New England (WIVNE) is celebrating Women’s History Month by looking forward and celebrating women in the industry locally. Every day on the group’s website a new woman is profiled from across New England.

“This year for Women’s History Month, we wanted to put the spotlight on local female filmmakers. We believe that visibility is crucial to the advancement of a well-balanced workplace.” Alecia Orsini, President of WIFVNE.

In 1981, eleven women, all Boston-based media professionals, came together to form the New England chapter of Women in Film. The founders are Mary Benjamin, Rebecca Eaton, Raquel Ortiz, Robin Landerman, Christine Dall, Christine Herbes, Alice Hoffman, Janet Krause, Edith Luray, Midge MacKenzie, Diane Miller, Harriet Reisen, Katherine Deutch Tatlock, and Susan Steinberg-Woll.

Women in Film & Video New England (WIFVNE) supports female voices within the film, television and media industry. By bringing together industry officials, workers & audiences, WIFVNE promotes positive images of women to the public and works to empower women working in the industry to achieve their professional potential.  Membership is open to everyone who supports their mission.

“It’s amazing to see all the women who have been making the local film community what it is today,” said Michele Meek, founder of NewEnglandFilm.com and editor of the new book Independent Female Filmmakers.
