Massachusetts filmmaker Cheryl Eagan-Donovan seeks Kickstarter support for Shakespeare for Bullies, an educational outreach project for her film Nothing is Truer than Truth. The film explores the life of Edward de Vere as well as sexual identity, a topic relevant to Shakespeare and his plays, and to students dealing with bullying as a result of their sexuality. “Bullying behavior is often related to anxiety about sexual identity,” explains the Kickstarter page. Shakespeare for Bullies will “empower students to change behavior by sharing their stories.”

Shakespeare for Bullies will be an interactive website for high school and college students to offer their personal stories in a variety of mediums. Outreach will also be geared towards teachers, museums, and other educators, and will include television and film festival screenings. The aim is to “encourage innovation in the application of the Shakespeare canon to the goal of promoting respect for others… By sharing their stories about gender identity and discrimination, homophobia, bullying, and the relationship between these, students will be empowered to change behaviors in the classroom, at home, online, and in the world at large.”

The goal is to raise $16,000 by August 30th. Funds will aid in post-production for the film, website design, classroom curriculum, and more. Eagan-Donovan teaches film, screenwriting, and literature in Boston and has worked with Women in Film & Video New England, Next Door Theater, and the Shakespeare Oxford Fellowship.
