Happenings

Celebrate the Provincetown International Film Festival June 18–22 on Cape Cod. Award recipients include Patricia Clarkson, Debra Winger, and David Cronenberg. Films screen at a few different venues. Check out the complete schedule and more information at ptownfilmfest.org (pictured).

Out Film CT presents the 27th Connecticut LGBT Film Festival May 30th to June 7th. Opening night party includes a screening of Boy Meets Girl. Films screen at a few different venues in Hartford. For a full schedule and more details, visit the festival website.

The Nantucket Film Festival runs June 25–30. Special events include opening night screening of The Skeleton Twins, closing night film Boyhood, and a Screenwriters Tribute to Aaron Sorkin. For tickets and schedule, go to nantucketfilmfestival.org.

Movies on the Block is back for the summer in Providence, Rhode Island. Enjoy free outdoor screenings at the corner of Westminster and Union Streets on Thursdays at dusk through September. Vermont’s LGBT Short Film Festival Cineslam is June 21st at the Hooker Dunham Theater in Brattleboro. For tickets and a list of festival selections, click here.

Check out the Roxbury International Film Festival June 25–29 in Massachusetts. Films will screen at the Museum of Fine Arts and Haley House Bakery Cafe. The festival also includes a free Youth Program. For more information, visit the festival website.

Industry Buzz

The LEF Foundation has announced the recipients of this year’s Moving Image Fund grants. Ten grants for production and post-production – $190,000 in total – were awarded to independent documentary filmmakers in New England. Providence, Rhode Island filmmaker Duncan Putney received the 2014 Amsterdam Film Festival’s Best Screenplay Short Film Award for Half Pint, which was shot last year in New England. The film is set in France during World War II. Read more about the film and Putney here.

The feature Black Mass has begun shooting in Boston. Johnny Depp stars as Whitey Bulger in the film, directed by Scott Cooper. Read more from Boston.com.

New Hampshire filmmaker Alfred Thomas Catalfo has found success with his feature script Vulture’s Row, which won recent screenplay awards in Rhode Island, Nashville, and the Slamdance Film Festival. The screenplay is adapted from Brendan DuBois’s novel Betrayed. Read more about this and other projects at his website.

The horror film Animal opens this month. The feature, produced by Drew Barrymore, was shot in Connecticut. Read more about the film and watch the trailer at EW.com.

Provincetown International Film Festival will join the growing list of festival partners of NewEnglandFilm.com’s Online New England Film Festival. Opportunities

The LEF Foundation is accepting proposals for pre-production grants until June 6th. Documentary filmmakers in New England are encouraged to apply. For guidelines and more details, click here.

Camden International Film Festival is now accepting submissions for its Points North Fellowship for this fall’s event. Selected winners will receive VIP passes, accommodations, travel stipends, and access to special events and programs at the festival. Filmmakers currently working on feature-length documentaries are encouraged to apply. The deadline is July 18th. For more details, click here.
