Every month, NewEnglandFilm.com highlights new local film projects looking for funding via crowd-sourcing. This month, we showcase two campaigns on Indiegogo. To feature your film in this series, e-mail editor@newenglandfilm.com.

Kickstart New England: Stitch

Emerson College student Michael Iemma seeks support through Indiegogo for his senior thesis, the short animated film Stitch. The film, described on the Indiegogo page as a “coming-of-age story about the bittersweet nature of growing up and letting go,” focuses on a relationship between two young men. It will be stop motion animation. Writer-director Iemma hopes the pro-LGBT film will provide a sensitive, authentic portrayal of gay relationships and have broader benefits for the LGBT community. “As an artist I want to create films that speak to my experiences,” he writes on the Indiegogo page. “And in daring to make works like Stitch which achieve this, we can begin to bring about the change that will one day make film and television about LGBT life controversial no more.”

Iemma’s goal is to raise $4,000 by December 7th. The film is partnered with the non-profit organization Fractured Atlas. Funds will go towards the materials and special equipment needed for the stop motion animation, as well as other production costs. Kickstart New England: It’s Great to be Here!

Vermont filmmakers Matt Wohl and Mark Covino have launched an Indiegogo campaign for their documentary It’s Great to be Here! What does it take to be a stand-up comic? This documentary reveals the lives of men and women dedicated to a life in comedy, particularly those of four performers with varied experiences and careers. As the filmmakers point out on their Indiegogo page, “Dying is easy, comedy is hard… Why do comedians endure low wages, a brutal life on the road, obnoxious hecklers and small crowds? What is the draw of comedy?” To answer these questions, they have already interviewed over 20 comics and shot in several states around the country, with future trips planned.

The goal for this project is to raise $22,500 by November 22nd. Money will go towards travel and post-production costs. Watch a short video, read more about Wohl and Covino, check out the donation perks, and donate at the Indiegogo page.
