Are you looking to apply to the Somewhat North of Boston Film Festival? Or just be an audience member? Our 2013 Festival Partner gave us the inside scoop in this festival profile.

Executive director Jay Doherty gives us the skinny on the Somewhat North of Boston Film Festival.

Number of Yearly Submissions: 260

Number of Films Typically Accepted: 60

What are you looking for when choosing which films you select?

Things that our audience (greater Concord / Central NH / North New England) will enjoy. We look for topics that relate to the area that are entertaining or informational. We also look for films that are different with good stories that people will enjoy. Good production, good sound, well edited, etc… Most important: great story.

What is your advice for filmmakers looking to apply to your festival, or to others?

  1. Over 95% of the films shown at The SNOB Film Festival are from submissions. The best way to be in the festival is to submit.
  2. We are known for giving chances to newer filmmakers. We are more likely to take a chance on a shorter films. New filmmakers, keep your films short.
  3. Our submission fees are very low allowing up-and-coming filmmakers a chance to get their name out there. Take this opportunity.

What is your advice to audience goers for how best to enjoy your festival?

  1. For feature films, read about them ahead of time. We try to pick a diverse group of films every year. Which means not everyone is going to like every film.
  2. Give short films a chance. If you don’ like one of the films just wait a few minutes and the next one will start. We try to group films so that a block has a common thread.
  3. There are always two or three choices per film block so pick what you like and don’t be afraid to try something new. SNOB FF ticket prices are very very low, allowing viewers to try new films and not worrying about spending lots of money on something new.
