Happenings

Celebrate films by and about women at the WAM!Boston Film Festival March 23–24 at the Brattle Theatre. Festival passes are available. Click here for more information.

Montpelier, Vermont hosts the 16th annual Green Mountain Film Festival March 22–31. Films screen at a few different venues. To learn more, visit gmffestival.org.

The Boston Student Film Fest will screen films online from March 18-31. Registrations are now open for the Filmmakers Networking Brunch on March 16. NewEnglandFilm.com Founder and Publisher Michele Meek will be a member of the 2013 jury. For more information, visit their website.

The Maine Jewish Film Festival runs March 9–16. Special events include opening and closing night receptions and the Women Filmmakers Forum. For a full festival schedule and more information, click here.

Check out the 13th annual Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival March 15–17 at the Chilmark Community Center. The festival kicks off with a screening of Lucy Walker’s Crash Reel. For tickets and more information, visit tmvff.org.

The Salem Film Fest runs March 7–14 in Salem, Massachusetts. The documentary festival will include screenings of The Ghost Army, Kind Hearted Woman, and West of Memphis. For tickets and the full festival schedule, visit salemfilmfest.com.

Boston native Alex Karpovsky will be in attendance at a screening of his new feature Rubberneck at the Brattle Theatre on March 1st at 8:15 pm. The actor-director also wrote the film, which was shot in Boston. The film will screen additional days as well. For more information, click here.

Industry Buzz

Last month the New Hampshire Representative Jeff Goley introduced the New Hampshire Production Coalition’s bill to increase film and television production in the state. For more information about this legislation and the NHPC, click here.

The reality show Boston’s Finest is now airing on TNT. The show follows members of the Boston Police Department; the executive producer is Massachusetts native Donnie Wahlberg. To learn more, visit the show’s website.

Massachusetts native Ben Affleck was a winner at the recent Academy Awards, receiving the Best Picture Oscar for his film Argo. The Massachusetts Film Office has more on other winners and nominees with Massachusetts connections here.

Vermont College of Fine Arts (VCFA) announced in January the launch of the state’s first graduate film school with award-winning filmmaker Laura Colella as faculty chair. The MFA in Film at VCFA is uniquely designed for independent filmmakers and screenwriters. Unlike traditional models, VCFA’s low-residency format allows students to attend weeklong, on-campus residencies in Montpelier before returning to their home communities to complete the semester’s work. Opportunities

The Community Arts Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts encourages young filmmakers to submit to the Do It Your Damn Self!! Junior National Youth Video & Film Festival. Filmmakers ages 6 to 12 can submit films under ten minutes. Submission deadline is March 11th. For more information on how to submit, visit diyds.org.

The New Hampshire High School Short Film Festival is now accepting submissions for this summer’s event. Submission deadline is March 31st. For rules, guidelines, and information on how to submit, click here.

The Flaherty Film Seminar encourages New England filmmakers to apply for the LEF New England fellowship. Four fellowships will be awarded to this year’s seminar, “History is What’s Happening,” and will cover the entire seminar registration fee. The seminar is held June 15–21 at Colgate University in New York. The LEF New England fellowship application deadline is March 1st. Learn more here.

The Arlington International Film Festival is now accepting submissions for their event this fall. The festival includes several categories, and high school filmmakers are encouraged to submit short films. The deadline is April 15th. Learn more at aiffest.org.

The Berkshire International Film Festival encourages filmmakers to submit for this summer’s festival. Submission deadline is March 1st. For more information, click here.
