Looking for a fright? New England has a spooktacular line up of Halloween films playing all this month. Check out the news for local films, upcoming festivals, and filmmaker opportunities. To submit news, e-mail news@newenglandfilm.com.

Happy Halloween

Prepare to be terrified at the Rhode Island International Horror Film Festival October 25–28. Films will screen at a few different venues; festival also includes the H.P. Lovecraft Walking Tour. For tickets and more information, click here.

Salem, Massachusetts hosts Haunted Happenings all this month to celebrate Halloween. Events include the Radio 92.9 Haunted Movie Series, a Charles Dickens film series, and a screening of Friday the 13th VII. For the full calendar, go to hauntedhappenings.org.

Think vampires today aren’t scary enough? Check out Roxy Cinema’s (Burlington, Vermont) screening of the silent classic Nosferatu on October 19th and 20th at 7:00 pm. A live music ensemble will accompany the film. Click here for tickets.

Bette or Joan? The Coolidge Corner Theatre presents a screening of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? on October 31st at 7:00 pm. This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the film. For tickets, click here.

The Somerville Theatre in Massachusetts hosts a screening of the silent film The Phantom of the Opera on October 21st at 2:00 pm. Jeff Rapsis will provide live musical accompaniment. Learn more here.

Several theatres around New England will host screenings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show this month: Vermont’s Palace 9 Cinemas on October 19th; the Flying Monkey Movie House in New Hampshire on October 26th; the Palace Danbury in Connecticut on October 27th; and the Full Body Cast at AMC Boston Common on October 26th, 27th, and 31st.

Check out free screenings of the documentary The Tillinghast Nightmare in libraries around Rhode Island this month. The film tells the story of “vampire exorcisms” in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. For more information, click here.

Happenings

Celebrate the New Hampshire Film Festival October 11–14 in Portsmouth. Highlights include the Young Filmmakers Workshop, several panel discussions, and special guests Mike O’Malley, Joyce Maynard, and Tommy Chong. Visit nhfilmfestival.com for more details.

Check out the Vermont International Film Festival October 19–28. The festival kicks off with a screening of All In and will conclude with the documentary Crazy Horse. Films screen at a few different venues. Learn more at vtiff.org.

The Portland Maine Film Festival runs October 4–7. Opening night film is 3 Days of Normal. Films screen at the Maine College of Art and the University of Southern Maine’s Portland campus. Click here to learn more.

The Regent Theatre (7 Medford St. Arlington, MA) hosts the Boston Bike Film Festival on October 12th. Get in the spirit by joining in a bike ride from the Park Street T station to the theatre beforehand. Visit bostonbikefilmfest.org for more details.

The Boston Palestine Film Festival runs October 5–13. Opening night will feature a screening of Habibi and Q&A with director Susan Youssef, followed by an after party. Films screen at the Museum of Fine Arts and Harvard Law School. Click here for more information.

Boston’s Symphony Hall hosts WGBH’s Classical New England Cartoon Festival on October 27th from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. The children’s event will feature cartoons on the big screen and live performances from PBS characters. Click here for tickets.

The New England Underground Film Festival takes place in Hartford, Connecticut on October 7th. Films will screen at La Paloma Sabanera (405 Capitol Avenue). Tickets are $10 general admission, $5 for students. Learn more here.

Rhode Island hosts the annual New England Broadcast and Cable Expo on October 16 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The event will be held at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence; the expo floor is free and open to the public. For more details, click here.

Support the Brattle Theatre in the First Annual Brattle Benefit Event, a two-day film marathon October 6th and 7th. Viewers can purchase tickets or register as a participant in the marathon. For a list of films and more information, visit the Brattle website.

Check out the Massachusetts Flash Film Festival at Belmont Studio Cinema (376 Trapelo Road, Belmont) on October 6th. Twelve competing teams will present their work beginning at 2:00 pm, followed by awards at 4:00 pm. Audiences can vote for Viewers’ Choice. Click here for more details.

The International Experimental Cinema Exposition (TIE) presents an eclectic and contemporary avant-garde film show in Beverly, Massachusetts at the Montserrat College Of Art on October 11th at 8:00 pm. The program features Super-8, 16mm and multiple projection pieces from artists that include Paul Clipson, Pablo Marín, Laida Lertxundi, Jason Halprin, Adam Levine and more, along with filmmaker/curator, Christopher May.

Industry Buzz

Massachusetts filmmaker Cheryl Eagan-Donovan recently kicked off an Indie Go Go fundraising campaign for her new documentary Nothing is Truer than Truth, which tells the story of Edward de Vere’s 16th century continental tour. Eagan-Donovan is a former president of Women in Film & Video/New England and currently teaches at Boston University and Northeastern University. Click here to learn more about the film and campaign.

George S. Clinton has been named chair of Berklee College of Music’s Film Scoring Department. Clinton is a composer who has scored for film and television, including Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee, the Austin Powers films, and Red Shoe Diaries. Read more about Clinton and his career here.

Jon Hamm, Larry David, and Kate Hudson are currently in Boston filming Greg Mottola’s new feature Clear History. Read more from the Boston Herald.

Made in Massachusetts, the feature comedy Here Comes the Boom starring Kevin James opens this month.

Opportunities

Kids are encouraged to submit to the Cambridge Community Art Center’s “Do It Your Damn Self!! National Youth Video & Film Festival.” Teens ages 13–19 or kids 6–12 can submit videos ten minutes or less. Submission deadline is November 26th. The Documentary Summit comes to Massachusetts for the first time this month. Boston University’s Center for Digital Imaging Arts (274 Moody Street, Waltham) will host the event from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on October 13th and 14th. To register, click here.
