Summer arrives this month, and with it comes a host of exciting film festivals! Check out the news for local films, upcoming festivals, and filmmaker opportunities. To submit news, e-mail news@newenglandfilm.com.

Don’t miss the ferry! The Nantucket Film Festival runs June 20–24. Highlights include Beasts of the Southern Wild, Brave, Your Sister’s Sister, and awards for Frank Langella and Nancy Meyers. Visit http://www.nantucketfilmfestival.org/ for a full schedule.

The Provincetown International Film Festival runs June 13–17. This year’s award recipients include Roger Corman (Filmmaker on the Edge), Parker Posey (Excellence in Acting), and Kirby Dick (Faith Hubley Career Achievement). Visit http://www.ptownfilmfest.org/ for schedule and more information.

The Cape Ann Community Cinema in Gloucester, Massachusetts hosts a screening of Jonathan Demme’s documentary Haiti: Dreams of Democracy on June 4th at 7:30 pm. Sponsored by the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church, proceeds will benefit the Elise Hansen Foundation, which supports young adults exploring environmental and social justice careers. New Hampshire’s Department of Cultural Resources presents “Arts, Culture, and the Law” on June 28th at the UNH School of Law. The conference runs 8:30 am to 6:00 pm. Tickets are $50, which includes lunch and refreshments. Register and learn more here.

CineSLAM, Vermont’s LGBTQ Short Film Festival, runs June 30th to July 1st. The festival includes several screenings, seminars, and the Chessie Award for Best Short. For the full schedule and more information, go to http://cineslam.com/.

The New Hampshire High School Short Film Festival takes place June 16th at 2:00 pm at the Sweeney Hall Auditorium at New Hampshire Technical Institute in Concord. Visit http://www.nh.gov/film/hsfest/ for more details.

The DocYard’s summer season begins June 4th. The documentary/discussion series will screen at the Brattle Theatre through August 27th. Visit http://thedocyard.com/ to learn more.

Check out the 25th Connecticut Gay & Lesbian Film Festival June 1–9. Films will screen at a few different venues. Highlights include opening and closing night parties, a centerpiece reception, and Connecticut Open House Day. Learn more here.

Filmmakers Collaborative presents “Making Media Now: Thriving in a Changing Landscape” on June 8th. The conference will be held at Massachusetts College of Art and Design from 9:00 am to 6:30 pm. Industry Buzz

The Massachusetts Senate recently rejected an amendment to restore arts, humanities, and sciences funding to the Massachusetts Cultural Council. The amendment proposed increasing the state appropriation for the Massachusetts Cultural Council to $11 million. To read more, visit the MCC website.

Sara Archambault, Program Director at the LEF Foundation and co-founder of the DocYard, is producing the upcoming film Street Fighting Man. Rhode Island’s Video & Vision is in production on A Sense of Place. The documentary centers around Island Moving Company’s “Open for Dancing,” a dance festival that takes place over several days in Newport, Rhode Island. Rhode Island filmmaker Laura Colella will premiere her new feature Breakfast with Curtis at the Los Angeles Film Festival this month. The film was shot in Providence. Learn more at http://www.breakfastwithcurtis.com/.

Opportunities

The Camden International Film Festival is accepting submissions for its 2012 Festival. The late submission deadline is June 15; the Withoutabox Extended deadline is July 13. Submit now to this fall’s Portland Maine Film Festival. Filmmakers can submit to Features, Shorts, Made in Maine, or One Minute Cell Phone Video. Regular deadline is June 30th; late is July 24th; extended is August 10th. Learn more at http://www.portlandmainefilmfest.com/.

LEF New England is currently accepting submissions for its Moving Image Fund pre-production grants. Proposal deadline is June 8th. For guidelines and more information on how to apply, click here.
