What’s Happening

The Martha’s Vineyard Film Society announced plans for a Green Film Night on Saturday, March 3rd, at 7:30 pm. The Film Society, in cooperation with The Vineyard Energy Project, Vineyard Conservation Society and Island Grown Initiative will present a number of films and discussions on the topics of alternative energy, design, and sustainable growth relevant to island communities. The Eye Opener film series at the Brattle Theatre will began Sunday, March 4th at 11 am and continue for eight weeks.  Screenings will be of upcoming art house films, films without distribution, and some classic reissues.   Past films have included Mutual Appreciation, Tarnation, and Jesus Camp.  Presented by the Brattle Film Foundation and the Chlotrudis Society. NewEnglandFilm.com is currently overhauling its industry directory. A call for updates was sent and we received thousands of responses.  Our staff is updating each by hand. The New Hampshire Film Office has created an online forum geared towards industry professionals, students, and anyone interested in networking and supporting New Hampshire’s film industry. Members of the forum will be able to post as well as view industry news, business opportunities, screenings, and sell and buy products. Those interested can also receive e-mail updates on New Hampshire Film Office programs, special events and other events. Check out www.nhfilmforum.com

Groton (Mass) Public Library’s winter film series, Small Time/Big Time: Independent Film in New England, will be held on Sunday, March 4th at 2 pm. Andrew Sniezek will screen his latest short film, The Container, which puts an interesting twist on a chance meeting between two people at a storage facility. Mick Hoegen, SAG-New England, Michael Belanger, screenwriter, and Drew Krassowski, composer, will join Andrew to talk about the film and to answer questions from the audience. The Chlotrudis Society for Independent Film will hold their 7th Annual Short Film Festival at the Coolidge Corner Theatre from March 2-8. Almanac by Bruce Knapp, In the Tradition of the Family by Todd Davis, Portrait As by Claire Fowler and Trina’s Collections by Ellen Lake, among others, will be shown. A panel on filmmaking in Rhode Island is planned for March 9th at 7 pm at Borders Books and Music in Cranston, RI. Panelists include Steven Feinberg, director of the Rhode Island Film and Television Office, George T. Marshall, executive director of the Rhode Island International Film Festival, and RI-based independent director and producer Jan Raben. It is free and open to the public. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston will be showing a series of four new 35 mm restored and renewed prints of classic French films. The restored films are Jean-Luc Goddard’s Two or Three Things I Know about Her, Jean Cocteau’s Beauty and the Beast, Max Ophüls’s The Earrings of Madame de…, and a complete digital restoration of Jean Renoir’s Rules of the Game. The 11th Annual Hartford Jewish Film Festival will take place March 10-18. The line-up includes 18 films from four countries. Learn more at www.hjff.org.

The Rhode Island International Film Festival will hold a special “first look” fundraising screening on Friday, March 23rd. They will be showing the Canadian film Memoires Affectives, plus several shorts. For more information visit www.film-festival.org/FirstLook07.php

The 9th Annual Boston Underground Film Festival will be held March 22-25 in Harvard Square and will show some of Boston’s most interesting and provocative underground films. Past films have included the world premiere of Bret Wood’s Psychopathia Sexualis, as well as special guests Bill Plympton, George A. Romero and Douglas Buck. On March 31st, Boston area filmmakers can compete in a film race where filmmakers are challenged to create a film in 12 hours. The Film Racing Tour will be visiting more than 10 cities, and all the films will be screened at the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge. The top films will stream online to compete for cash and prizes. What’s Happened

On February 21, 2007, The Flickers Arts Collaborative in Newport, RI announced the passing of a founding member and friend of the organization, Lcdr. Joseph Marshall.  In addition to a distinguished military service, Marshall was a board officer of the Flickers Arts Collaborative, producer of the annual Rhode Island International Film Festival, the Jubilé Franco Américain, the Jamestown Chamber Music Series, the RI Film Forum, ScriptBiz and numerous community artistic events.  A special memorial service and scholarship program is planned in his memory. What Will  Happen

Two Berklee College of Music seniors, composer Lucas Vidal from Madrid, Spain, and music business major Steve Dzialowski from Brussels, Belgium have teamed up with Dave School at Universal Studios, Orlando, FL, to produce a live recording of one of Vidal’s original scores in Boston’s Symphony Hall for an animated film. The movie is titled Chimera and will show on a giant screen behind the 200-piece orchestra playing in real-time. For more information contact Mitzi at mdorbu@berklee.edu.
