Film Festivals

The second annual New Hampshire Film Expo (NHFX) will take place October 11-14, 2002 in Derry, NH. NHFX has expanded to four days this year and will feature screenings, workshops, a script competition, and auditions. Visit www.nhfilmexpo.com for further details.

The Williamstown Film Festival (WFF) marks its fourth season this year. WFF runs October 18-27, 2002 and will host 34 events as well as screen 19 films including features, documentaries, and shorts. Please visit www.williamstownfilmfest.com for more information.

The 2002 Vermont International Film Festival will take place October 24-27th in Burlington, VT. Founded in 1985, The Vermont International Film Festival is dedicated to screening socially conscious independent film and video. The Rhode Island International Film Festival (RIFF)will sponsor The RIFF Horror Film Festival which runs October 25-27,2002. The festival takes place in Providence, Rhode Island and features horror films and thrillers. The Haunted Newport Film Festival takes place October 25-27, 2002 in Newport, Rhode Island. Haunted Newport will feature over 120 events, making it one of the largest Halloween celebrations in the country. Evonne Hyla Wetzner, Underground Film Revolution (UFR) Founder, will open The Video Underground, a new independent video and DVD rental store in Jamaica Plain. In addition to independent, cult, and foreign films, the store will carry films by local filmmakers. Wetzner hopes to have The Video Underground open to the public by the middle of October 2002. Boston resident Andrew Mudge presented his latest film "The Perfect Gooseys" at the Telluride Film Festival over Labor Day weekend. The film stars Boston’s Will Lyman and was produced in association with the local production company FilmShack. "Chicken Pox Pal," another film by Mudge, was an official 2000 Sundance entry and winner of the Spielberg Award at the 2001 Houston Film Festival. Filmmakers Collaborative announced that Filmmakers Open Studios 2003 is currently scheduled for April 12 and 13, 2003. Filmmakers Open Studios is an annual citywide cultural event free of charge that showcases the work, processes, art, and technology of film/video/digital professionals and artists working in the Greater Boston area. They are currently inviting companies, filmmakers, and others involved in a diverse range of film/video activities to contact them about participating in the upcoming event. Screenings

The Museum of Fine Arts Boston (MFA) will screen "Loaded Gun: Life, and Death, and Dickinson" produced by Jim Wolpaw and Steve Gentile, and "Last Call: Dreams, Main Street and the Search for Community" by John Stanton. Future Animators of the Future present their third festival of video and animation at the Coolidge Corner Theater October 19-20, 2002. The event features over 20 new independent shorts from around the world. For more details visit www.coolidge.org or call 617-734-2501.

The Boston Irish Film Festival (BIFF) in conjunction with the Boston Film & Video Foundation (BFVF) and Paramount Classics will present the Boston Premiere of the acclaimed new British-Irish feature film "Bloody Sunday," winner of the World Cinema Award at Sundance and The Golden Bear Award at Berlin. Based on Northern Ireland’s "Bloody Sunday" killings in 1972, this critically acclaimed drama chronicles the events surrounding a civil rights march in Londonderry that led to the deaths of 13 Catholics at the hands of British paratroopers. The screening will take place on Thursday, October 3 at 7:30 p.m. at Loews Boston Common, 175 Tremont Street (corner of Tremont and Avery Sts.) The civil rights activist and "Bloody Sunday" survivor Don Mullen will be available for a Q&A after the screening. $10 tickets at the door.
