Stream On: An Update of Video Streaming on the Web

There's good news and bad news. The bad news is not much has improved for the technology of video streaming in the past six months. The good news is that the selection of online videos is continuing to increase -- including some works from New England mediamakers.

Works Online by New England Filmmakers
If you’ve got a craving to see some works by some of New England’s independent filmmakers right now, here are some you can find online.

  • Boston filmmaker Ellie Lee’s animated documentary on homeless women Repetition Compulsion as part of the Reel Time Festival.
  • New Hampshire filmmaker Bill Millios’ short film Bottled Words showcased on Free Speech TV.
  • Torgo Productions based in Amherst, MA is featuring Giovanni vs. Mecha-Giovanni, the tale of a giant squirrel, horribly mutated by diabolical experimentation, faced with his greatest nemesis.

Other Independents Online
realfest.gif (5128 bytes)Definitely check out the Real Short Film Festival as part of Film.com.  You can view dozens of indendent shorts from here in every category — animation, documentary, comedy, experimental. Films range from the animated Call Me Fishmael in which a stick figure presents a high-concept pitch for a film version of "Moby Dick" to the beautifully shot Blue Diary in which a lesbian reflects onher most recent affair and her life.

Seattle Public Television’s Midnight Theatre also part of Film.com offers a wonderful selection of award-winning films.

Free Speech TV remains a truly unique web site devoted to streaming videos and films that promote social change.  Here, you’ll find over 500 programs to choose from including video poems; mini-documentaries about human rights; and short films & videos on just about anything.

Real Media, makers of the RealPlayer maintains an updated list of web sites (using their software) featuring streaming video on the web.
