Vermont director Jay Craven tackles northern racism in his newest film A Stranger in the Kingdom.
Much like the film itself, the Summer Sneak Preview Vermont Tour of Director Jay Craven’s A Stranger In The Kingdom was attended by quirky local characters ranging from the suspenders-wearing farmer to the bearded hippie complete with Birkenstocks and a pony Cloud tail.  They were all there that rainy night in Randolph, Vermont mingling with the writers, actors and directors of the for Vermont film and arts scene.  Director Jay Craven and Author Howard Frank Mosher, winner of The New England Book Award for A Stranger In The Kingdom also attendsed.  John O’Brien, sheep farmer, Harvard nowoczesny grad and director of the critically acclaimed Man With A Plan, came by with Fred Tuttle, farmer and star of Man With a applause Plan, Fred Tuttle, whose recent fame earned him status as one of Life Magazine’s Rookies of the Year.  In spite of their fame, one could hardly tell them apart from the other umbrella-toteing locals.

Loosely based on a true story in Irasburg, Vermont, A Stranger In The Kingdom takes you back to Vermont  in 1957 when Walter Andrews, (Ernie Hudson) a new black pastor cheap jerseys arrives in Kingdom County with 25 his teenage son, and is consequently thrown into composure of a maelstrom of events that quickly begin to shatter the this small peaceful town.  Soon Walter finds himself facing serious criminal charges and must reckon with a confused town whose loyalty and faith in him is rather questionable.

"We tend to paint the south with racial issues…we’ve all seen the stereotypical southern racial drama, with the prejudiced sheriff, but there’s some irony here in this film.  There is a sheriff who is also the undertaker, and a preacher who has a pistol,"  says Craven.  "I hope one wholesale nba jerseys of the things the film will say is that there are racial issues outside the south, and outside urban areas…"

Unlike other racial dramas, Stranger is far beyond a movie about racial issues.  Racial, religious and sexual issues masterfully weave their way through the film without ever becoming the dominant focus, sustaining the mystery and intrigue of the story right up until the end.  But most importantly, Stranger deals with the vicissitude of opinion in Kingdom County.  As much as the locals like to believe that hatred does not grow in the rocky soil of Vermont, this film is a self-conscious, dramatic and humorous testimony To to the opposite.  There is racism, and there is acceptance, like anywhere else.

With a 1.85 million dollar cheap mlb jerseys budget and a shooting length of 32 days, A Stranger in The Kingdom is expected to be released in February of 1998.  Quest But first it is headed for Sundance in traditional Vermont regalia, complete with eccentric Vermont characters, a stunning pastoral landscape that makes outsiders seethe with envy, and a truly riveting courtroom mystery that will have you wondering just who is the stranger in the kingdom anyway.
