Quay Brothers Retrospective Screenings at the Coolidge

Posted in
Event Location:

On Monday, April 7 at 7:00 p.m., the Coolidge Corner Theatre begins a month-long showcase of the phenomenal work by this year's Coolidge Award recipients, world-renowned animators the Quay Brothers. The Quays will be at the Coolidge May 6 and May 7 for Award events.

The April 7 program features four of the Quay Brothers' brilliantly conceived, visually striking short films:

STILLE NACHT 1: DRAMOLET - This short was commissioned by MTV as a between-programs “Art Break.” A frost of iron filings forms on a bleak landscape while a lonely figure looks on (1988, 2 minutes)

REHEARSALS FOR EXTINCT ANATOMIES - Built around music by Leszek Jankowski and filmed in black and white, the Quay Brothers create a dreamscape of contrasting lines, changes in focus, and melancholy figures (1987, 14 minutes).

DE ARTIFICIAL PERSPECTIVA, or ANAMORPHOSIS - A clever documentary piece on the phenomenon of anamorphosis, by which the eye perceives images differently at specific angles. The film explores several famous works of art that make use of the principle, as well as demonstrating anamorphosis through the Quays' animation (1991, 14 minutes)

THE COMB - Sinister, mysterious, and compelling, THE COMB presents a shifting landscape of fairytale motifs (1990, 18 minutes).

Additional retrospectives will take place on the following dates:

April 13: THE PHANTOM MUSEUM, THE CABINET OF JAN SVANKMAJER, THIS UNNAMEABLE LITTLE BROOM (THE EPIC OF GILGAMESH), NOCTURNA ARTIFICIALIA

April 20: QUAY BROTHERS COMMERCIALS, DUET, THE SANDMAN

April 27: INSTITUTE BENJAMENTA

All retrospective programs will be introduced by filmmaker and author Peter Flynn, founder and director of the Boston Irish Film Festival. Mr. Flynn teaches courses in Media History, Theory, and Production at Emerson College.
