It makes sense that someone like Mike Perlman—who loves things that fly in the face of convention—would direct an advertisement for a thrift shop. Perlman takes his appreciation for unconventionality a step further though, by transforming that advertisement into Clothes Encounter, a clever parody of the Macklemore song “Thrift Shop,” which features the same beat with altered lyrics.

NEFilm: When did you start making films?

Perlman: I’ve been at it since roughly 2001—the days when Adobe Premiere would crash unexpectedly and your entire timeline would disintegrate even after it was saved. It’s a love. I can’t explain it.

NEFilm: How did Clothes Encounter come about?

Perlman: We made the video after we were hired to make a commercial for a local thrift shop.

NEFilm: Who helped make the film possible?

Perlman: It was made possible by the shop owners and their friends. Also, both my wife, and my collaborator Brian Shaffer helped out by starring in it with me.

NEFilm: Are you working on any new projects?

Perlman: I’ve started work on The Chief, a web series that will double as a pilot. It’s based on the Chief character from the Beastie Boys “Sabotage” music video.

NEFilm: Based on your experience, what advice do you have for other filmmakers?

Perlman: Always be humble, kind, and courteous. Don’t create anything unless the fire exists within you to make it.
