Happenings

Maine Film & Video Association presents the 2016 Maine Short Film Festival. The festival premieres on December 11th at 5:30 pm at the Strand Theatre in Rockland, then tours the rest of the state this winter and spring. For a list of winners and tour locations, visit mainefilm.org.

Rhode Island’s Jamestown Arts Center hosts “Holiday Shorts: Heartwarming Shorts” on December 17th at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $10. For a list of the shorts and more information, visit the Center’s website.

The Portland Museum of Art hosts the 2015 Maine Outdoor Film Festival Awards Show and Screening on December 11th. The event includes a filmmaker social and access to the museum gallery, as well as awards for Best Feature, Best Short, Best Conservation Film, Best Maine Film, and more. Learn more here.

A few chances to catch It’s a Wonderful Life at the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts this month. The 1946 classic screens December 16th, 18th, 19th, and 20th. For showtimes, visit the Brattle Theatre.

Billings Farm & Museum in Woodstock, Vermont hosts a screening of the Sundance-nominated documentary Best of Enemies on December 5th at 3:00 and 5:00 pm. Former ABC bureau chief Barrie Dunsmore will introduce the screenings. Learn more here.

Spend the holidays at Concord, New Hampshire’s Red River Theatres this season. The theatre hosts a White Christmas sing-a-long on December 23rd at 6:00 pm, and a New Year’s Eve celebration and screening of Kiss Me Kate on December 31st at 9:30 pm. In partnership with New Hampshire Public Television, Keene’s Colonial Theatre hosts the premiere of Downton Abbey‘s sixth season on December 13th at 2:00 pm. The screening is free and open to the public; tea service will also be available for $10. Learn more here.

Get in the holiday spirit at Coolidge Corner Theatre this month with special screenings of National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation; Silent Night, Deadly Night; Scrooged; and The Muppet Christmas Carol. For showtimes, visit coolidge.org.

Industry Buzz

The Boston Society of Film Critics will announce this year’s winners on December 6th. Check their website for updates.

David O. Russell’s new feature Joy opens on Christmas Day. The film was shot in Massachusetts and stars Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, and Bradley Cooper. Check out the trailer and more information at the film’s official website.

2015 Rhode Island International Film Festival winning short My Home, directed by Nguyen Phuong Mai, has been nominated for Best Animated Short Film for the 2016 Academy Awards. Read more here.
