NewEnglandFilm.com is pleased to announce that Cambridge, Massachusetts filmmaker Gabriel Robinson has been awarded the NewEnglandFilm.com – Stowe Story Lab Fellowship to 2015 Stowe Story Labs.

Now in its third year, Stowe Story Labs bring screenwriters, filmmakers and creative producers together with seasoned industry professionals to work on story, demystify the workings of the film industry, and forge new professional relationships. This year’s 4-day event will be held September 12-15 in Stowe, Vermont.

Since 1997, NewEnglandFilm.com has been a leading resource for film and video professionals and aspiring filmmakers in the industry.

“We’re thrilled to be able to continue the partnership with Stowe Story Labs, who, like NewEnglandFilm.com, aims to support emerging writers and filmmakers in their work,” said NewEnglandFilm.com Founder Michele Meek. “Robinson’s screenplay project fascinated me immediately, and I’m looking forward to her honing the script so we can see it in theaters in a few years!”

The partnership between the two organizations enables NewEnglandFilm.com to recommend a New England-based filmmaker or writer to receive a fellowship to cover all fees to attend the Stowe Story Labs to improve their craft.

“We are delighted to again partner with NewEnglandFilm.com to provide the NewEnglandFilm.com Fellowship,” said Stowe Story Labs founder and director David Rocchio. “Part of the mission of the Labs is to support local and regional filmmakers. Working with Michele and NewEnglandFilm.com has been a phenomenal way to reach New England screenwriters and filmmakers and, each year, find wonderful talent to bring to the labs. This year is no exception,” he said.

The 2015 NewEnglandFilm.com Stowe Story Labs Fellow, Gabriel Robinson grew up just outside of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Her early love of myths and folktales led her to the study of religions at Bard College and the University of Chicago. More recently, she worked for John Rubin Productions on a documentary about Alfred Russel Wallace, the under-appreciated co-discoverer of evolution. She is a Visiting Scholar at the Women’s Studies Research Center at Brandeis, and lives in Cambridge, MA with her partner, Gavin, son, Otto, and ancient cat, Monkey Breath.

Her work-in-progress screenplay, The Soldier Nun tells the story of Catalina de Erauso, a 16th-century Basque woman who ran away from the convent, disguised herself as a man, and adventured in the New World. After she was found out, her account became a bestseller, and she secured a papal dispensation to dress as a man. Catalina’s audacity has hooked audiences for centuries, but the picaresque form she wrote in gives few glimpses of her inner life. Her screenplay recreates her as a feeling person, who sought both freedom and connection in a world of ritual, theater, and brutal colonial violence.
