Every month, NewEnglandFilm.com is highlighting exciting new local film projects looking for funding. This month, put down your carbs and pick up your wallet for documentary Carb Loaded, which takes a hard look at the food culture that's leading to a rise in diabetes. To feature your film in this series, e-mail editor@newenglandfilm.com with a blurb on your film and Kickstarter campaign.

Connecticut filmmakers Lathe Poland and Eric Carlsen seek support for their documentary Carb-Loaded: A Culture Dying to Eat. The film will focus on diabetes, its causes, its links to obesity, and the “sky-rocketing increase” in the United States.

After being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes a few years ago, filmmaker Poland set out to explore why diabetes is becoming so prevalent and the food culture that leads to this and other diseases. The filmmakers have interviewed several subjects so far, including doctors, nutrition scientists, and researchers, and they hope to speak with even more over the coming months.

The goal for this project is to raise $40,000 by August 7th at 8:00 pm EDT. Funds will be used for further interviews; creating a musical score, graphics, and animation; and content licensing and fees. To donate, read more about the film, watch a brief trailer, and see a list of interview subjects, visit the Kickstarter page.
