August is filled with fantastic local film festivals, from Woods Hole to Rhode Island International to KahBang. Check out the news for local films, upcoming festivals, and filmmaker opportunities. To submit news, e-mail news@newenglandfilm.com.

Happenings

Look out, fans of New England film, because the Online NewEnglandFilm.com Film Festival is coming Sept 1! We partner with film festivals from around the region to screen the work of local filmmakers. Three of our festival partners have their festivals this month! Check them out below.

The Woods Hole Festival runs through August 3. You can see a range of filmmakers with New England ties, including Oscar winner Ernest Thompson, premiering NH film Heavenly Angle, as well as Andrew Mudge’s The Forgotten Kingdom, Allan Piper’s Married and Counting, Maria Agui Carter’s Rebel, and Ryan Scafuro’s Bending Steel. The Rhode Island International Film Festival runs August 6–11. Special events include opening and closing night celebrations, block party, and “Future Filmmaking: Digital Documentary That Bridges Cultures.” For a full festival schedule and more information, click here.

Bangor, Maine hosts Kahbang 2013 August 8–11, a festival featuring film, music, and art. Highlights include a midnight film showcase and a new VHS Screening Night. Visit kahbang.com to learn more.

Swing by Movies on the Block in Providence, Rhode Island at the corner of Westminster Street and Union Street on Thursday evenings at dusk to watch feature films outdoors on the big screen. This month, check out The Dark Knight Rises on August 1st, Cinema Paradiso on August 8th, The Matrix on August 15th, Aliens on August 22nd, and Goodfellas on August 29th. The Boston Harbor Hotel hosts outdoor movies this summer Fridays at dusk following music performances. This month is Tootsie on August 2nd, Rear Window on August 9th, Mary Poppins on August 16th, From Here to Eternity on August 23rd, and Anchors Aweigh on August 30th. Learn more here.

Industry Buzz

Universal Studios and the Regal Fenway movie theater hosted the Boston premiere of R.I.P.D. last month, where first responders from the marathon, Watertown police, and their families were invited to attend. The film’s stars Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds were also at the event. Read more from Boston’s Channel 5 here.

Opportunities

River Arts of Stowe, Vermont hosts “Stowe Story Labs” September 14–16. Screenwriters, filmmakers, and producers are invited to apply for this three-day workshop to discuss storytelling and reaching audiences. The deadline to apply is August 16th; there is no application fee. For selected participants, the program fee is $495. Click here to learn more.
