It's a good month for documentaries, with the LEF awarding $165,000 to local documentary filmmakers, and the DocYard kicking off their summer program. Check out the news for local films, upcoming festivals, and filmmaker opportunities. To submit news, e-mail news@newenglandfilm.com.

Happenings

The Nantucket Film Festival runs June 26–30. Highlights include Screenwriters Tributes to David O. Russell, Barbara Kopple, and Lake Bell, a comedy roundtable, and Afternoon Tea and Talks. For more details, visit nantucketfilmfestival.org.

Revisit your school days at the New Hampshire High School Short Film Festival on June 15th at 1:00 pm. The event will be held in Sweeney Hall Auditorium at New Hampshire Technical Institute in Concord. Admission is free. Read more here.

Check out the Provincetown International Film Festival June 19–23 on Cape Cod. Awards will be presented to Harmony Korine, Matt Dillon, and Ed Lachman. For a full festival schedule, click here.

Brattleboro, Vermont hosts the LGBT Short Film Festival CineSLAM on June 22nd at 6:30 pm. The event takes place at the Hooker-Dunham Theater; tickets are $10. Learn more here.

The DocYard kicks off its summer program with a screening of William and the Windmill on June 3rd at the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge. Films start at 7:00 pm, followed by a Q&A. The summer series runs through August 17th. Learn more at thedocyard.com.

Massachusetts’s Roxbury International Film Festival screens June 27–30. Opening Night film is Things Never Said; Closing Day features Conversation with Tonya Lewis Lee. For a full schedule of events, click here.

The Martha’s Vineyard Film Society hosts a celebration of film and music June 14–16. The festival will feature works that explore music and culture. Festival passes are available. Learn more here.

The Connecticut Gay & Lesbian Film Festival runs through June 8th. Films screen at a few different venues in Hartford. Events include opening and closing night celebrations. Learn more here.

Industry Buzz

The LEF Foundation has awarded nine production and post-production grants — a total of $165,000 — to documentary filmmakers in New England as part of the LEF Moving Image Fund. This year’s recipients are Liz Canner, Sarah Colt, Marie-Emmanuelle Hartness, Michelle Maren, Michel Negroponte, Joshua Neves, JP Sniadecki, Jeffrey Teitler, Thorsten Trimpop, Peter Galison, Robb Moss, Allie Humenuk, Amy Geller, Ed Pincus, and Lucia Small. The Boston Jewish Film Festival has announced their upcoming annual event will take place November 6–18. This year marks 25 years for the festival. A full schedule will be revealed in September. To learn more, visit bjff.org.

The feature comedy The Heat opens this month, which was shot in Massachusetts last year. Directed by Paul Feig, the film stars Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy.

Opportunities

Last chance to submit to the Camden International Film Festival! Extended deadline is June 28; $60 for features, $40 for shorts. Learn more at the festival website.

The LEF New England Moving Image Fund is currently accepting proposals for pre-production grants. Proposals are due June 7th. For more details and guidelines on how to submit, click here.

The 48 Hour Film Project tours New England this summer. Participants are given two days to write, shoot, and edit a short film. The contest will be in New Hampshire this month. To register, click here.
