From aquadrops to skydrops to backdrops, this software has something for everyone.

"Suppose you were an idiot and suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself." Mark Twain

Now suppose you wanted to create a stunning video sequence with falling dollar bills in front of a moonlit sea getting zapped by lightning, and you were neither an idiot or a member of Congress. What to do?

The answer? Digital Hotcakes from TriLab Productions ($97 – $149 each, Win/Mac), of course. This set of six CDs contain nearly 200 royalty-free, full-resolution video backdrops that can be imported into Final Cut Pro, Premiere or any video editing software capable of importing Targa or QuickTime sequences.

These backdrops run from a few seconds up to about 30 seconds, and contain colorful, fully loopable, animated sequences such as skies, clouds, water, fire and geometric elements.

The current line-up of six discs includes:

  • 32 Alpha Mattes
  • 36 Animated Aquadrops
  • 42 Animated Backdrops
  • 50 Animated Skydrops
  • 56 Pyromations
  • 84 Organic Backdrops

What could be easier? Just copy one or more of these files to your hard drive and import them into your NLE or compositing software (don’t try to run them from the CD it’s too slow).

Of course, just like clip art or buy-out music, sometimes the thing you want just won’t be there and you have to produce it yourself. But Digital Hotcakes is a great starter pack for video editors and motion graphic artists. The variety of backdrops makes this a useful set of discs to have in your graphics toolbox.

If only members of Congress were this useful…
